The Dokdo Islets lie 87.4km southeast of Ulleungdo Island and 157.5km northwest of Oki Island which is part of Shimane Prefecture in Japan.

Dokdo is can be seen from Ulleungdo but not from Oki Island.

Composition and Area

Dokdo Islets are mainly comprised of two large islands called Dongdo and Seodo as well as 89 rocks in the surrounding waters. Altogether, the islet covers a land area of 187,554㎡. The closest point between Dongdo and Seodo during low tide is 151m.

Dongdois located to Southeast and has a land area of 73,297㎡. The highest point on the island, Usanbong, stands at 98.6m while the circumference of the island measures 2.8km. Major facilities on the island include a docking facility, solar power generators, the Dokdo Coast Guard building, a communications tower, a satellite antenna, a watched lighthouse, etc.

Seodois located to Northwest and has a land area of 88,740㎡. The highest point on the island, Daehanbong, stands at 168.5m while the circumference of the island measures 2.6km. Major facilities on the island include the Residents’ Living Quarters, hiking trails, drinking facilities (mulgol), etc.

The rocks comprising the Dokdo Islets include the Gajebawi, Neopdeokbawi, Samhyeongjegulbawi, Chotdaebawi, Dakbawi, Chotdaebawi and covers a total land area of 25.517㎡.

The Geographic Names of Dokdo

The National Geographic Information Institute prepared and carried out a plan to reorganize the geographical names of locations around Dokdo in collaboration with Ulleung-gun Office. After being reviewed by the Provincial and Korea Committee on Geographical Names, names were given to the peaks and outlying rocks.

  • The Tsushima Current, a branch of the Kuroshio Current, flows northward across the Straits of Korea
    • During the winter, the water current turns east near Dokdo.
    • During the summer, the water current flows north past Dokdo before turning east.
  • From the north, the North Korean Current, a branch of the Liman Cold Current, turns counterclockwise.
